Violence occurs whenever anyone harms - or threatens to harm - a person's body, feelings, or possessions.

No one is entitled to be violent.

Sample Take Action Projects!!

1) Check with local Community Agencies to see what projects have been developed. Start by reviewing their information available on the web. Volunteer Center of Benton Franklin Counties. Benton Franklin Dispute Mediation Center. Contact HelpLine web page: The Columbia Free-Net where over 1000 local resources are available on-line.

2) Check with Educational Institutes to see if classes are given in Dispute Resolution/Mediation.  Check out the National Association for Dispute Resolution web site to help youth resolve conflicts.

3) Check out e-teen and SHINE on-line teen organizations helping youth become involved and helping their communities.

One Person can Make a Difference!!

4) Adopt a lower grade school or after-school program - do peace building activities with them.

5) Coordinate your school's Day of National Concern About Young People and Gun Violence.

6) Get students to sign pledges for peace.

7) Talk to your City or County Council about how they can prevent violence

8) Create a nonviolence poster, t-shirt or bumper sticker

9) Decorate a bulletin board at your school, local library, or local businesses to spread the SAVE message.

10) Invite a speaker to talk about violence.

11) Sponsor a "Families Against Violence" night.

12) Paint a peace mural

13) Start a SAVE chapter with elementary students.

14) Plant a peace garden and care for it throughout the year

15) Sponsor a self-defense training

16) Develop/present skits on conflict resolution for other students

17) Plan a school dance with a non-violence theme

18) Hold a peace march in your city or town

19) Talk to school officials or the school board about what they can do to stop violence and uspport you in your efforts.

20) Sponsor a violent toy and gun turn-in

21) Write an article for publication in school or local newspapers on violence

22) Sponsor a "Turn Off the TV Week"

23) Survey and report TV violence and advocate for non-violent programming

24) Sponsor a graffiti clean-up

25) Sponosr a midnight basketball tournament

26) Conduct letter writing campaigns for issues you care about

27) Make handmade toys for low-income children

28) Sponsor a reading lock-in

29) Collect stuffed animals for the fire or police department drives

30) Have a "Wish List" party for a shelter

31) Hold a canned food drive.
