Our first activity was held at Barnes and Noble.  We read stories to kids and made crafts with them, like reading journals.  The kids were great, you just had to get used to them hanging on your arms and legs.  We worked with The Reading Foundation.  It was a great kick-off for the Summer of Service.

We didn't really know what to expect at the Life Care Center in Kennewick, but we ended up having a lot of fun.  We played BINGO and bowled with the residents.  (Some of our partners couldn't handle the excitement and fell asleep.)  But who can beat free donuts and lemonade?

We reported to the Richland Food Bank for food sorting.  When we got to hot we got to go in the freezer to cool down.  This also provided a much needed reward at the end of our work - ice cream. We'll go back there anytime.

On a HOT morning we assisted the Volunteer Chore Service on various projects. At ours we mowed an elderly man's lawn and cleaned up his porch. Unfortunately none of us had ever mowed a lawn before!  In the end the sweat was flowing.  Afterwards we had blisters as proof of our manual labor.  (Tip:Always wear work gloves when doing yard work.)

The Day of Caring.  Swarms of hungry volunteers swooped down on United Way early in the morning to enjoy a free breakfast.  After the feeding frenzy was over, we dispersed into tons of projects that benefited our community.  After a few hours of hard work, we descended once again on United Way and, even hungrier than before, ate free BBQ.  It was fabulous to see so many volunteers
in one spot.

We finally got a chance to expel some creative energies.  The youth volunteers gathered at Howard Amon Park to paint trash cans for the City of Richland park system.  We had a lot of fun with our paint brushes and spray cans.  Not only did the trash cans get painted, so did some of us.  (Hint: When painting trash cans wear old clothing you DON'T care about.)
